Cervélo R5

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

A pure mountain bike. No, no, not a knobby tire sull suspension rig; a bike built with mountains passes as its perfect terrain. The Cervelo R5 is the bike that Jumbo-Visma's Jonas Vingegaard rode to the 2022 Tour de France win. It's a bike that was built to be as light as possible and to have the most predictable and nimble handling of any bike on the planet.

All too often, bike brands build lightweight climbing bikes that help riders float to the top of a mountain pass, but they forget that you need to come back down at daredevil speeds. That handling separates the R5 from all the other wanna-be climbing bikes on the market. An ability to inspire confidence in the corners when you know full well that a millimeter of lycra ain't gonna do shit if you crash at 50mph while braking to line up for a switchback corner.

The new Gen6 Nomad refines the already favored package with a host of new features and tweaks that don't change the category; they evolved it.

WHO IS THE RIDER?

You want a no-nonsense all-around bike that goes up hills as well as it goes downhill. Even if you're not the fastest climber on the planet, you want a bike that responds when you pedal and feels so light and nimble that it might be thinking for you.

Maybe you don't push the limit on every downhill, but you like riding the edge of your tire's grip from time to time and want a bike that is composed to the edge of your limit.

Not someone looking to eek every last drop of performance out of a bike but still want a nimble feel and classic look? You're the type of rider who doesn't want to ride the latest superbike every day; you want a low-stress classic bike that blends performance with maturity.

WHAT WE LOVE

Classic Shape

There is something to be said for a bike with an understated shape. In a world where Cervelo makes the radical S5, the R5 feels like the polar opposite. Even with all of its newly added integration, when you take a step back, the entire package just looks right.

Featherweight

The R5 is literally as light as you can make a bike, well, as light as you can make a bike and still race the Tour de France. There is also a feeling that only comes from riding a lightweight bike, and the R5 is the platform that invented it.

Tire Choices

With the added compliance of the new frame and the ability to run up to a 34mm tire, the R5 lets you choose how you want it to feel. Put on fast 25mm tires, and it comes alive, feeling precise and focused. Add more volume to the tires with low-pressure 32mm tires, and it rides like a cloud over any pothole that dares get in your way.

FULL FEATURED

We can't list them all well... we could, but if If they don't convince you to order the Cervélo R5 or visit our stores to experience it firsthand, we're not sure what will!

Improved Ride Quality

This bike is less stiff than its predecessor. That's not something you hear every day, is it? Typically new bikes tout their gains in stiffness and performance, while Cervelo took feedback from their pros that improving the bike's compliance would enhance performance on rough roads, long rides, and during long grand tours. In addition to the added compliance in the R5's front end, the seat tube junction has been lowered by around 15mm, allowing for more seatpost exposure and resulting in more flex in the post, providing more rear-end comfort.

Weight Savings

A bike designed for the mountains should always prioritize weight savings, and the new R5 puts it at the front of the line. The previous generation of R5 needed to be fitted with ultralight wheels to hit the pro racing weight limit of 6.8kg / 14.99lbs (with bottle cages, computer mounts, and so on.). The new R5 saves 130g over the previous bike's frame. The new bar and stem each drop 12g, respectively, of the prior generation, while the seat post drops another 20g. That all adds up to a savings of 174g - Weight that can now be used in other areas like deeper wheels or larger volume tires.

Integrated Cockpit

While the new cockpit saves weight, its primary purpose is to tidy up the front of the bike. Unlike the integrated bar from years ago, Cervelo has developed a clean solution that still allows for adjustability. Cables from the hoods run in an open channel underneath the handlebar, not through it, allowing for easy maintenance and adjustments to be made. The cables then move through the stem and past the headset bearing into cable guides that are molded into the frame. This system easily allows you to raise or lower the stack without affecting the cables.

Aerodynamic Tuning

So this is a tough one to quantify, Cervelo has invested time and energy into massaging the new R5 to slip through the wind, but that isn't the bike's primary motivation, so Cervelo isn't quoting any aerodynamic data. With that said, the bike's aero package certainly improves based on the feature above, the clever integrated bar and stem that helps clean up the front of the bike and makes for a wonderful-looking package. Turn your eyes to the frame, and you'll notice even more shaping. All of the R5's tubes feature a blunt leading edge and a squared-off tail. This shaping helps smooth the air hitting the bike as you ride, while the squared-off shaping helps to release air from the tube as it exits.

FRAME SIZING

If you're on the cusp between the recommended height range of two sizes, the absolute best thing is to try to ride them both. At a minimum, check the stack/reach measurements on your current bike and compare it to the new model you are looking at to get an idea of a fit you are already comfortable with. If riding the bike is not an option, our Customer Service can help you identify a size more specific to your body type. Call us at (866) 600-BIKE.

The R5 is available in sizes 48cm - 61cm.

FRAME GEOMETRY

A bike designed for the mountains has to walk a fine line; it needs to be agile on twisty mountain roads and stable at insane speeds while on daredevil descents (even if we mortal folks never reach "insane speeds"). The R5 is not just known for its scant weight, more than any other feature; it's known for its nearly perfectly refined, confidence-inspiring geometry.
