A bike for the way riders ride

CALEDONIA

THE BIKE WE SHOULD ALL BE RIDING.

Endurance bikes aren't a new idea. The idea of a bike that moves ride quality to the top of its design mandate rather than treating it as an afterthought.

IThe problem with most bikes in this category has always been the same thing; a bike that prioritizes comfort and stability always ends up losing the feel that makes riding a bike fun in the first place. They end up being great at dealing with bad road surfaces, but when you lean them into a corner at any speed beyond a "Sunday stroll," they fall completely apart.

Since Cervelo approaches every project with the same philosophy, "How do we make riders faster?" the Caledonia inherently starts by moving down a different path. It focuses on keeping the "fun" in the bike by making the handling geometry similar to that of their race bikes but adjusting it slightly to allow for larger tires. The Caledonia also makes rider fit a priority and allows the rider to adjust the front end down to the same low stack of the R5 and up more than 60mm with spacers that maintain the bike's attractive aesthetic.

WHO IS THE RIDER?

You're the type of rider who is likely to pin a number on for a local criterium, but you still want to feel fast. If you head to an event, it's about the adventure, the exploration of new roads, or the distance you're traveling.

When you're on the bike, you are willing to offer up the needed whip-fast handling of a race bike for some predictability and stability while leaning over in the twisty and often rough corners of the backroads. You want a bike that you can still sprint out of a corner, which feels good when you get on the throttle and leave it wide open.

Talking about those twisty and often rough corners, you don't want to end your ride early because every bump you hit feels like a sledgehammer to your sit bones. You want a bike that provides compliance in the frame and then lets you fine-tune how much cushion you need with tire size. Since the Caledonia is designed around a 30mm tire, you'll have smooth roads ahead.

WHAT WE LOVE

Fit Range

The Caledonia does the best job we've seen of making the bike look good regardless of your stack height. Slamming the front end of the bike for a racier fit? You got it. Need some extra stack height and need to run some spacers on the top cap? Everything still looks clean and tidy.

More Stability

It's a monster truck for the road. The Caledonia smartly adjusts the handling geometry to provide stability and confidence on rough roads without ruining by de-tuning the handling and turn-in. All the comfort without the sacrifice.

Cleanliness

This refers to Caledonia's attention to detail. The bike's ability to elevate its looks and usability regardless of the rider's fit needs is unmatched by any other bike in the industry. Its intelligent system of spacers to adjust the front end and its slick frame shaping throughout make it one of the cleanest bikes available.

FEATURES

Frame Choice

The Caledonia allows you to choose between the standard Caledonia-5 that features a fully integrated front end. All cables are hidden from the wind and routed through the frame. The Caledonia-5 also uses a D-shaped seatpost that adds more comfort from its controlled flexibility to the back of the bike. The standard Caledonia frame utilizes a standard round Seatpost and doesn't utilize the same integrated cockpit. Regardless of your frame choice, the Caledonia presents the same experience.

Wide Fit Range

Making a bike with a wide fit range is easy; making a bike with a wide fit range that looks good is hard. The Caledonia's front end allows for a stack as low as the race fit of the R5 and provides the ability to add up to 60mm of spacers. While the bike is set up in the down position, it utilizes a 7mm low top cap that the bike's stem can mount flush to. For riders needing a taller fit, the Caledonia ships with a separate 20mm tall cap that smoothes the lines of the front end into the spacers. This allows the rider to have an integrated look and access the widest fit range in the Cervelo line.

Interated Mudguard Mounts

At first look, you'd never know that the Caledonia has mounts for full mudguards. The clever design has removable mounting points that thread to the bike's through axles to provide a secure mounting point for when you need the extra coverage and a clean look with the mounting points removed for when you don't. In addition to the functionality, you maintain the ability to run a 32mm tire to ensure the ride is smooth.

Performance Handling

So often, bikes within the endurance category sacrifice handling to provide comfort. The Caledonia treads lightly and makes tweaks to offer stability without creating sluggishness. It slackens the head tube angle by 1° and increases the bike trail by 3mm. These two front-end changes don't dramatically affect bike turn-in but make significant gains in the ability to ride through rough terrain.

Geometry Comparison

Bikes in the endurance category are always challenging to explain. We always want to
use words like "Stability" and "comfortable" without making the bike feel long and slow.
When designing a bike in the endurance category, it's a similar problem; many of the
tweaks that help to create stability and comfort often come at the cost of agility and
responsiveness. With the Caledonia, Cervelo has made incremental changes that help
add some stability but don't dull the performance characteristics.

Head Tube and Trail: A bike's headtube angle and trail number are often a good
predictor of how the bike will turn into a tight corner. The Caledonia has a HT Angle 1°
slacker and a trail number 2.7mm longer than the Cervelo R5 (Race bike). Together
those changes help the Caledonia keep its front wheel going straight on bumpy,
potholed road surfaces. Those changes also are needed to adjust the bike for the larger
tires speced on the Caledonia and help avoid overlap while cornering at slow speeds.

BB Drop: If you draw a straight line between a bike's axles, BB drop refers to how far
below that line the center of the cranks sits. A lower BB will provide more stability, but it
comes at the cost of being able to pedal while leaning over in a corner. The Caledonia
is designed around a 30mm tire (rather than a typical 26mm race tire); the slightly lower

BB feels the same as the R5 making for a familiar feel while allowing for the higher
volume tires.

Wheelbase: It makes sense that a longer wheelbase makes for added stability but too
long, and it can be impossible to get a bike to turn. The wheelbase is made of two parts;
the front center and rear center - or the distance from the BB center to the front or rear
axle. To help clear the larger tires fitted to the Caledonia, the bike's rear center is
extended by 5mm. The front of the bike is also extended by around 10mm to help with
toe overlap of the front wheel.
